Description

Baked Apple Donuts are a delightful fall treat with a delicious apple pie filling and a sweet cinnamon sugar topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Apple Pie Filling: 1 1/4 cup diced gala apples (about 2-3 medium apples)
  • 1 ½ tbsp salted butter
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • 1 tbsp all purpose flour
  • Donuts: 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup low fat buttermilk
  • 3 tbsp salted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • Cinnamon Sugar Topping: ¼ cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp salted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. For the Apple Pie Filling: Peel, core and dice apples. Heat a sauce pot over medium heat.
  2. Add butter and sugar to the pot, mix well.
  3. Add diced apples and mix, then sprinkle in flour and apple pie spice. Mix again.
  4. Cover the pot and lower the heat to medium-low. Cook until the apples are softened, stirring every few minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool down.
  6. For the Donuts: Preheat oven to 350℉ and grease a donut pan.
  7. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.
  8. Sift in all dry ingredients and whisk until incorporated.
  9. Add the cooled apple pie filling mixture and mix well using a spatula.
  10. Transfer the batter into a piping bag, cutting the tip to 3/4 inch opening.
  11. Squeeze batter into the donut cups of the pan, filling each almost full.
  12. Bake for 11-12 minutes, then cool on a wire rack.
  13. For the Cinnamon Sugar Topping: Melt butter in a cup and mix sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  14. Brush the top of each donut with melted butter and dip into the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  15. Place back on the wire rack and repeat with all donuts.
