Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Blend until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture, stirring until just combined.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently 4-5 times.
- Roll the dough out to about ½-inch thickness. Cut into circles using a 2-inch round cookie cutter.
- Place the dough circles onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until lightly golden on the edges.
- Let the tea cakes cool completely on a wire rack.
- Dust the tops generously with powdered sugar to create the “fog” effect.
Notes
- Add ground cinnamon or nutmeg for a spiced twist.
- For a citrusy flavor, add lemon zest to the dough.
- For a richer finish, drizzle melted chocolate over the cooled tea cakes.
