Description

Churro Cruffins are a delightful fusion pastry, combining the crispy, cinnamon-sugar coating of churros with the light, flaky texture of a cruffin. These easy-to-make treats are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert, offering an irresistible crunch and sweet flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet and brush it lightly with melted butter.
  2. Shape the Cruffins: Roll the pastry sheet into a log, then slice it into 8 equal rounds. Using your fingers, gently fan out each round into a rosette shape, tucking the edges under to form a muffin-like shape.
  3. Heat the Oil: Heat 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Fry the Cruffins: Fry the cruffins in batches, seam-side down, for 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are puffed and golden brown. Drain the cruffins on paper towels.
  5. Coat in Cinnamon Sugar: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the sugar and cinnamon. While the cruffins are still warm, roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly coated.
  6. Serve: Serve immediately for the best crispness and flavor.

Notes

  • For a filled version, add whipped cream, chocolate ganache, or Nutella before frying.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the cinnamon sugar for a different spice flavor.
  • Dip the finished churro cruffins in melted chocolate for an even more decadent treat.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day.
  • Reheat at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes to re-crisp.
  • Unfilled, uncoated cruffins can be frozen for up to 1 month.
